Greyhound Handicapping Systems – Should You Change Yours?

01/12/2011

Why would you want to change something that’s working? Well, how about changing it to see if you can make it work better? Even if you’re happy with the system you use to pick dogs, wouldn’t it be nice if it picked more dogs?

There’s a real danger of getting stale if you just settle for winning a little at the dog track. Basic handicapping skills can usually work well enough for almost anyone to cash tickets. Beyond that though, it takes a good method, some effort and time.

Usually, it’s the time and effort that people don’t want to put in. Even when they realize that they can make more money if they just put a little more into learning how to handicap, they’d rather rest on their laurels. This doesn’t make sense to me.

Greyhound handicapping systems can only go so far. If you find a good one – and there are some good ones out there – you still have to work at using it. Sure, you can just put it into action “right out of the box”, but you should really try it out on paper first.

Reading a method once and then going to the track and betting it is a recipe for disaster. And even after you’ve tried it and seen that it works, why wouldn’t you want to add your own input? Use it, sure, but also see if you can find places in it where you can adjust it for your track.

Every track has biases in speed, track composition and post positions. You should know what your tracks are, so that you can see how they influence the handicapping method you use. Even the best system may work better if you add these factors to your basic usage of it.
