The Labrador Retrievers have their origins in Newfoundland and not in Labrador, as the name may suggest, although both regions are located in eastern Canada. It`s possible that geographic confusion leaded to the breeds name. Exact data about the way the breed gotten to populate Newfoundland doesn’t`t exist.

The first official record regarding the breed is a letter wrote by a traveler throw that region, dating from 1822. Fishermen brought the breed in Great Kingdom at the beginnings of XIX century. Initially, dogs were in a variety with long and abundant fur, also known as Newfoundland (large) and a variety with rough and short fur, also known as inferior Newfoundland or St. John`s dogs. Nowadays Labrador Retrievers, most likely, have their origins from St. John`s breed.

Initially the Labrador Retrievers weren’t used as pets. Retrievers were raised exclusively to become hunters because they had superior qualities. The breed was officially accepted in the English Kennel Club in 1903 and in the American Kennel Club in 1917.

Since then, Labrador Retrievers became useful as guide dogs for blind people, for deaf or for any other persons with different handicaps. That`s because of their intelligence, discipline and balanced temperament, as well as for their ability to get along with people. Labs are trained as therapy dogs to bring relief to homeless persons and children with disorders of emotional nature.

The army and police have used this breed for their taking refinement to smell criminals, drugs, weapons, bombs and to identify people trapped under rubble produced by earthquakes or other disasters. So you can tell how training your Labrador can become useful. And don’t think that you would have to put all that work that those people put in to professionally train the dogs. As a matter of fact, training a Labrador is a very easy thing to do and can become second nature to you once you learn a few tricks and you teach the dog some as well.

Now that you have a solid knowledge of your dog`s history, you can understand more easily his character.
