So, you’ve gone to all the trouble of insulating your dog kennel but still you find that its not staying warm enough in winter or cool enough during those hot summer days. What can you do? There are several other things to consider, and changes that you can make to get optimum use from your insulation.
Firstly, make sure that the pen is positioned away from getting too much hot afternoon sun. One of the advantages of having a moveable pen is that you can move it around your yard during the day, or switch it from one location in the morning to another in the afternoon, to avoid too much afternoon sun. If you have a more permanent kennel then there are other things you can do to make the most of your insulating.

Paint your Kennel
Remember white deflects and dark absorbs. If your goal is to keep your pet warm, then paint the kennel with a dark color or stain, or use dark wood panelling on the outside of it. If you want to keep it as cool as you can, paint it white or some other light color. A reminder though, don’t use lead based paint as if your pup chews on it, he’ll become very ill.
Positioning
Position your dog house so that the door or opening won’t allow the chill winds or snow and rain to easily enter. This might mean having it face a wall or a fence. It may not look as nice to see the back side of the pen, but if it means keeping your dog warmer then it’s worthwhile doing that. Incidentally, make sure the door is large enough for your pet to go in and out, but not too big. The bigger the door, the more cold or rain can get in.
Flooring
You might want to consider putting an elevated wooden floor in the pen, especially if it’s built on concrete (which gets very cold in winter.) Alternatively you can lay down some nice warm equine mats or some other flooring, which adds a buffer between the cold ground or cement floor, and the dog.
These few tips can make all the difference in how effective the insulation of your dog kennel is.
